paying the fcc to use a two way radio?

i want to buy a two way radio to communicate with my husband while he is at work, its a 2 mile distance. However, while looking to buy one online, I see alot of reviews that mention having to pay the FCC to use them?! Is this true? I see two different types, GMRS and FRS. Can someone give me some links to a set of 2 way radios’s, under $60, that you dont have to pay anything extra to use? Thank you!

FRS does not need any extra license, but GMRS does.

It’s just two different systems. I find that FRS is good enuf for pretty much everything.

You may be happiest if you get a set with "privacy codes" to be able to ignore excess chatter.

  2. About everything out there requires a license. You can use channels 8-14 only without a license on all those radios though.

There is a new service that doesn’t require a license at all. However, they are a bit more costly.

You didn’t say the distance that you wanted to communicate. Typically, all these radios have about a mile or less range, regardless of what the maunfacturers say.
