If you use Portable two way radios, you should consider using a speaker microphone or a “speaker-mic” with your portable radio. As the name implies, the Speaker Mic is both a remote speaker and a remote microphone.

Simply put, a Speaker Mic will make portable radios survive longer, and they will often add more clarity in both the audio output coming out of your radio and the audio input you put into your radio. That means you are going to hear and be heard more often than if you didn’t use the Speaker Mic. And that, may make the critical difference between your radio system being able to deliver a communication path for you.

Like many radio owners, you may have a lot of money invested in your radio system. The speaker microphone is generally a very reasonably priced addition, and it can pay for itself in portable radio repair costs relating to portable radio handling accidents. With a Speaker Mic, the portable radio can remain securely fastened to the users belt loop, in the protective carrying case, where it is much less likely to be damaged. The Speaker Mic head can be clipped to the shirt or uniform in a close proximity to the mouth and ears, and it will be much easier to hear in this location. Transmitting simply requires turning your head, depressing the “push-to-talk” switch in the speaker and speaking in a clear and audible voice. It’s that simple.

Let’s take a closer look, and see what makes a Speaker Mic work better in portable radio usage than trying to use portable radios without a Speaker Mic. What just jumps off the page as a major difference, is the size of the speaker in the speaker mic itself. Most modern portable radios are very compact, and the audio capacity of the speaker is usually limited by the size of the speaker they have fit into that very tight, compact radio. The speaker mic typically has a larger speaker, and its proximity to your ear assists the audio process. Also, it has closer proximity than the ambient noise of your surroundings and this gives the Speaker Mic audio the added benefit of seeming more discernable.
