Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio

Mrfixitrick shows a series of seven experiments with his Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio, a non-powered crystal radio circuit built in a jam-jar, that does more than just be a radio.

This simple device shows abilities such as: detecting lightning, making voice phenomena, interacting with all forms of light, creating music and sound effects, reading a computer screen, acting as a mike, and detecting RF pulses.

The Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio is plugged directly into the iMac computer sound-in port. Audio Hijack Pro software provides the gain and real time sound effects based on the radio’s input.

The radio’s antennas are inspired by Tesla’s high voltage examples, and its basic LC circuit is similar to Tesla’s original inductor and capacitor circuit schematics.

    Normally lightning sounds like static on a regular detector radio, but on this one, the software is set up super-sensitive such that it sets off a nice resounding, booming, full sound.

    You know shomething what I dont. I have several detector radios , and was listening to there in storms too , but never was I hear lightning. Just awesome.

    Oh, it was real lightning! A storm was approaching, and there were very audible hits that shook my sound system every minute or two.

    Thx for your ansver! I hear just comon station, and there chasting, (I think that is why I use just amplification and not sound modulation) . Just one question , was you hear a real lightning , or was just sounds like a one ? Aniway , its really intrestig :) !

  7. The voice sounds at …
    The voice sounds at 1:17 are real radio voices with pitch change and reverb added. There’s no “real” spirit voices there, as far as I know. However, the same pitch alteration technique can be used to find sounds and voices that are not normally heard.

    If the radio is silent, that means the gain needs to be turned up to make it more sensitive. When the gain is cranked up, the radio becomes more sensitive to radio waves, to things in its environment, and to the internal workings of the computer.
