   BFO stands for “BEAT FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR”. If you notice certain “donald duck” squawking talks that you cannot understand on certain frequencies such as in the 7 Mhz (40 meters), 10 Mhz (30 Meters), 14 Mhz (20 Meters), or in the 27 Mhz (11 Meter) bands, it was called “SINGLE SIDE BAND (SSB), a mode of communication used for amateur, military, aeronautics, medical, marine, and certain utility and business purposes. The BFO decodes it properly. It can also decode CW (”Continuous Wave”) Morse Code

   Be careful when …
   Be careful when connecting external antennas to that Radio Shack/ Realistic Shortwave Radios. They are prone to static damage! I have the Realistic DX-390 which was damaged by static buildup on the antenna. I had replaced the original ront end FET transistor with common MPF102 several times, until I got fed up. Just be careful, or you’ll render those radios too deaf to hear any signal!

   PETS AND ANIMALS CATEGORY? Maybe it’s because you can see the turtle on the background, LOL!

   I love tinkering and modifying shortwave and scanner radios, particularly adding more channels and frequency more than what it can do by factory presets. For one, I once installed a BFO to received single sideband on a cheap, chinese made shortwave portable, and change ceramic filters for enhanced selectivity.
