Amazing. I took my neice to this show at the San Marco theatre at a midnight show. She had NO idea what it was about. She now understands Berlin, gays, rock n’ roll, transgenderism, and her uncle. I love it.

  9. @mparx66 Yes, …
@mparx66 Yes, Yitzhak is played by a woman, however the character is supposed to be a man. Hansel had basically forbidden him from dressing drag. That is why i find it so touching when he holds the wig out for Yitzhak, we see the sadness in Yitzhak’s eyes as he thinks he is just going to put it on Hedwig, than the look of disbelief and finally relief and beautiful happiness when he is floating across the audience. I get choked up every time they touch hands in that scene.

@lanegwyn I still lift up my hands to this and Bowie’s Rock and Roll Suicide. As they sing, “You’re not alone!” I can feel it. There is great solidarity among the freaks of the world, and we must keep it that way.

IMHO the gender roles are blurred rather than reestablished. Yitzak, apart from being Miriam Shor, gets to REVERT to drag….even remembering that Miriam Shor is Miriam Shor, a woman playing a drag queen is not exactly a stereotype (outside of Victor/Victoria). Hedwig reverts to Hansel FORM but then speaks of their SELF as a part of a company of FEMALE rock artists. “Here’s to Patty, And Tina, And Yoko, Aretha, and Nona, and Nico, and ME”. To me that seems to blur the boxes.

  18. When I was a misfit …
When I was a misfit loser middle schooler (as opposed to the misfit loser high schooler I am now), I used to play this on my iPod at night and actually lift up my hands (sometimes at midnight). I hoped/ thought that others elsewhere were doing it too; there was some imagined solidarity in it.
    This was/is a fantastic movie.
