Actually, not sure about the reviews on it, but i have heard good reviews about the c.crane. nevertheless, i agree that teh GE super radio is awesome. however, one of mine - well after 2 years of use - the frequency lock doesn't work and it drifts like crazy.

my new favorites for AM and SW listening are a brand out of southern china called "degen" - they are pretty much making all the radios for everyone else now too. there are several good models. the bais cone that gets really good reception is the "DE1107" - in the US these radios are sometimes branded as "Kaito."

for example" the new Kaito KA1121: AM/FM/WX/SW +SSB Radio with Detachable MP3 Player & Recorder" this radio is difficult to learn, but awesome to use.

personally i use a radio shack verison of this radio: SANGEAN ATS818ACS SHORTWAVE RADIO.
it still allows for recording onto cassette. which i know is old fashioned, but i like it.

the other option is to buy an AM antenna. there are a few on the market. some sit next to the radio, others plug in. c.crane does sell these as well. so check it out.

i also wanted to add that i have the first bayogen freeplay ever released and it is ok, but not the greatest. i also go a new one that has solar and wind up - and has a flashlight and horn on it. it is very good. i like it.
References :
The superradio as someone else stated in another post is supposed to be a very good reception radio for the AM band with most DXers using a superradio and the selectenna together for their listening pursuits.
References :
Just get a good, reasonable priced set - but include the Select-A-Tenna. It's an interesting device that I bought years ago that really boosts the antenna power of any AM radio. It's a big, round plastic device called a "Select-A-Tenna." You put it next to your radio and - wow! What a difference.
