Amateur Radio: HF portable setup

This is just a short video of me setting up a portable HF radio station. Since I had my cell phone with me, I decided to make a video of my setup. This video was not planned, so please excuse the cell phone video quality.

HF is still somewhat new to me because I upgraded to General in 2007. The hobby is just something I play around with on occasion. I’m not very active.

I got involved with Ham Radio for a last resort means of communication in the mountains. I have a 2 meter handheld that I carry while camping and hiking.

Where did you get the tripod. I’d like to get one.

  11. criticalzen, Ham …
criticalzen, Ham Radio is all about fun, experimenting with technology, and talking to new friends around the world as well as local.

The gear used in this video can be used for local simplex and repeater communication, as well as long distance HF communication.

As for practical emergency communications, having a reliable source of communication is always beneficial and has many uses.

  12. That Hamm Radio …
That Hamm Radio sure has changed a lot since the one my grandpa used. It is so much smaller now. I don’t see the use in practical field applications if everybody you contact is halfway around the world. For an emegency communication device, it might not serve any purpose. For chit-chat, it might be cool. At least when you speak with someone in a foreign country, you get to hear their voice – unlike conversations on the internet. The constant use of call signs seems annoying. (Whiskey,Delta, etc)

AI4QT’s comments are the questions I have as well… I’d like to get the 817 for portable, but would like the power of the 857 if needed… I’d like to see a spec for the current draw with 20W output….what is your battery life like? – 73, John – K4NIN

  16. Enjoyed the video. …
Enjoyed the video. Wondering though, if your fan on your 857 comes on each time you transmit.? Mine does and so I’m not sure about taking it out for portable QRP work since I’m concerned my battery wouldn’t last long. Not sure how much power is drawn using the fan since as I said, it comes on each time I transmit–even low power. But it seems as if you are doing some QSOs on your battery at 20 watts of output. Thanks for posting. 73 AI4QT in Huntsville AL.

  24. Nice setup. I …
Nice setup. I always found portable operation more rewarding. I use an Icom 718, which is a bit on the heavy side and power hungry, but it is nice to have some power if needed.

How is the performance with the vertical? I usually just string up a wire antenna, but the region I usually operate portable in (Adirondack Mountains) has many trees for supports.

How is the weight and power draw with the 857?

  25. Great video to …
Great video to watch! Love the idea of a tripod with the antenna on top. 73′S Dave 2e0ijk
