Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio: Wormhole Voyage #1

This crystal radio in a jam jar is able to “receive” a moving computer screen-saver, and respond with rich real-time sound effects!

The Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio’s sensitive antennas pick up on the RF emanations of the computer screen. The crystal circuit delivers an audio signal to the computer, where the software Audio Hijack Pro increases gain and alters the pitch in real time.

This screensaver example shows a journey across Hyperspace and back through Wormholes. All sounds are generated in real-time by the radio and software.

    This has funky spiral antennas and has a direct audio connection to the computer. The basic circuit is the same as other crystal radios, I just use it differently.

    However, Mr Gold’s spirit crystal radios, which this is modelled after, are specially tuned to act as beta brain wave blockers.

    So if Audio Hijack Pro alters pitch in real time, the actual musicality to the track aren’t inherent to the “spirit radio’s” outputted signal right?

    If I shut off the monitor but keep the iMac on, then the radio will go relatively silent. However, it will still be picking up sounds of the workings of my iMac even from 1-2 feet away. Also, AM radio sounds might be heard then, if they were drowned out previously.

    You never get total silence from the Spirit Radio…there is always some line noise, computer noise, and odd crackles and weird sounds in general. If it is quiet, then you simply increase the software gain until something tunes in.

  22. The antenna length …
    The antenna length and design affects what frequencies are predominately resonant. The antenna, as part of the L-C (inductor-capacitor) circuit, can affect both the selectivity and the sensitivity for pulling in AM stations. However, most any antenna will work for the alternate purpose shown here.

    The football antenna was an experiment and was designed like an antenna that Tesla used ro transmit power. It didn’t work particularly well as a RF field detector, but sure looks cool!
