I have about 125 car radios that I need to power up in my house. Most do not have a wiring harness attached. How can I easily power each up? I want to take pics of them powered up so I can sell them. I don’t need speakers or anything just power. How can I easily power them if they don’t have harnesses?

You need a 12 volt source and some small gauge wire.
You can use a car battery or a 12 volt power adapter from something around the house.
A battery charger or something… I would use the small low current source to test it. The small charger/adapter is less likely to do damage if you get the connection incorrect the first time.
Getting power to the wrong pin is bad no matter how little current, but lower is better. A car batter at 650 + amps will pop it quick for sure if wrong…
Hopefully they are marked.

It depends on the connector type, but just poke the wires in the connector. If it has pins then skin a little extra coating off the wire and fold it up to make it thicker and balled a bit. Then poke it on the pin.
maybe wrap a little piece of tape or paper around the wire so it doesn’t short to the other pins.
For the small female end connector just stick a pin in it and wrap the wire to the pin.

You do know which is the power pins for each radio right?
If not, You’ll have to look up the connector diagrams online…

I don’t know if all radios are case grounded. If they are then connect the ground to that and poke the hotwire in the connector. Beware though, it might make it into a paper weight. You could pull the case apart and look at the board to see what pins are what…

I like to make life difficult..sorry…

That’s all I have to offer is poke away..

have fun

I have a few old radios that have some insulation off of them. I don’t want to fire them up this way. Please, I need help.

If function is the only concern, all you have to do is ensure that you replace any wires with at least the same gauge or higher. That covers the current rating, which is a function of the conductor cross-section. Hardware store/home Depot wire is all 600V rated (except for the low-voltage doorbell wire, I think that’s 300V-rated). The voltage rating is a function of the insulation.

If you’re restoring and want identical wire, search around the web for antique radio repair/hardware sources, I think you can still find places that sell the more common vacuum tubes and cloth-covered wire.

when people or governments use radios to communicate how can they do it without someone just tuning to the frequency and just listening to everything they are saying? how come 2 people cant be broadcasting on the same frequency? there cant be that many frequencies where everyone can have their own right?

Radio waves are electromagnetic waves which means they are just like visible light except with longer wave lengths.

So imagine that I am sending you a message in Morse code using a green flashlight. If at the same time there are other flashlights going off, as long as they are in other colors, it wouldn’t scramble that message. You can easily filter other colors lights out, leaving only the green color light and obtain the message. This is because green light has a different frequency then say red or blue.

AM radio basically works the same way. Each station is preset at a specific frequency and the message is delivered by variations in the amplitude just as if you were to modulate the brightness of a flashlight. That is why it is called Amplitude Modulation (AM).

If two people were to use the same frequency then you could have interference. This is why the FCC sets strict guideline and rules on who owns what frequency. It allocates frequencies usage between radio stations or devices used for different purposes far enough apart to minimize interference.

Also when two transmitters are far enough apart then the same frequency can then be reused without having to worry about interference.

A good example of this is mobile phone towers. Each tower represents an area similar to a cell in a honey comb. Each tower is able to manage several dozen channels/frequencies within the cell. Adjacent "cells" do not use the same frequencies to avoid interference. But a cell that is a few miles away can then reuse the same frequency. When you talk on a mobile phone, the phone and the towers are constantly negotiating in the background to figure out which channel to communicate on. So as you are driving down the freeway your phone automatically switches from one channel to another to communicate with various towers without you noticing.

Early mobile phone designers came up with this concept.. that is why mobile phones are also called "cell phones".

Yeah… most radios will generally fit any car. Usually, you have to buy an installation kit made to fit your particular car and the size of the radio you want to install. The kit will sometimes include adapters that allow plug-in installation of the wiring with no cutting and splicing required.

The analogue signal will be switched off in my area in the Autumn and over to the digital signal, but what will happen to car radios and also the radios at work places?? Will they become redundant and will all car radios need to be replaced?? If this is the case, are there any funds available to assist in the replacing of any analogue radios we all may have??

The digital switchover for this year affects terrestrial television signals only. It will not affect radio signals.
There is a provisional 2015 date for the digital radio switchover, but this will be partial – essentially all the national station, plus BBC local stations, will switch to digital only, freeing up frequencies for more local radio services on FM. The date has not yet been confirmed, and one of the reasons it may be delayed is low availability of DAB car radios.

DAB converters already exist for car radios, such as the Pure Highway (http://www.pure.com/products/product.asp?Product=VL-60905 ), which will enable you to listen to digital only stations on your existing radio.

It will work. The only thing you have to worry about with analogue is picking up digital Ham radio qso’s but I am sure this is not the case. That being said, analogue will still pick up any intended station.

The FM Band in Japan is 76 to 108 MHz, any important broadcasts will be received in the 90 to 108 MHz range.
